Romanian Simona Halep, the No 3 seed, beat Spanish qualifier Cristina Bucsa 6-3, 7-5 to move into the last 16 of the Citi Open on Monday evening.
The Romanian, ranked 16, improves to 32-9 on the season. She is making her first appearance at the Citi Open since 2017.
Halep, ranked No 16, will face the winner of the match between American Madison Brengle and Russian Anna Kalinskaya next.
