China Open: Volynets upends Kostyuk in second round

American Katie Volynets won against Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk, the No 14 seed, 7-5, 6-3 to move into the third round of the China Open at the National Tennis Center in Beijing on Friday.

Volynets, ranked No 60, will play the winner of the match between Japanese Naomi Osaka and Kazakh Yulia Putintseva, the No 21 seed, next.

In the previous round of the Beijing tournament, the 22-year-old American beat Hungarian qualifier Dalma Galfi (7-5, 6-1).
