China Open: Starodubtseva upsets 10th seed Kalinskaya to make quarters
The Ukrainain will take on the winner of the match between Japanese Naomi Osaka and American Coco Gauff, the No 4 seed, in the next round
Ukrainian qualifier Yuliia Starodubtseva advanced to the last eight of the China Open by defeating Russian Anna Kalinskaya, the No 10 seed, 7-5, 6-0 at the National Tennis Center in Beijing on Tuesday.
This was the Ukrainian’s first career win over a top 20 ranked player as well as her first WTA 1000 Series quarter-final.
Having come through the qualifying draw, Starodubtseva has now won six matches this week. Ranked No 115 in the world, she will play the winner of the match between Japanese Naomi Osaka and American Coco Gauff, the No 4 seed, next. With her results this week, the 24-year-old will make her top 100 debut on Monday.
In the previous rounds of the tournament, the Ukrainian won against German Laura Siegemund (6-4, 7-6 (3)), No 27 seed Katerina Siniakova (6-2, 6-2) and Armenian Elina Avanesyan (6-3, 6-1).
Kalinskaya, ranked No 14, edged out American qualifier Hailey Baptiste (3-6, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (5)) and benefited from the abandonment of American Peyton Stearns (3-6, 6-3, 3-1) earlier in the week.
