Russian Liudmila Samsonova advanced to the last 16 of the China Open by defeating No 12 seed Petra Kvitova 6-4, 7-5 on Monday.
Samsonova, ranked No 22, will play the winner of the match between Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk and Tunisian Ons Jabeur, the No 7 seed, next.
In the previous round, the Russian won against American Alycia Parks (6-4, 7-6 (4)).
Kvitova, ranked No 14, beat Chinese wildcard Xiyu Wang (6-7 (6), 7-5, 6-3) in the previous round.
