China Open: Ostapenko upsets Pegula to reach last eight
The Latvian will face the winner of the match between Russian Liudmila Samsonova and Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk in the next round
Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, the No 13 seed, upset American Jessica Pegula, the No 4 seed, 6-4, 6-2 to move into the last eight of the China Open on Wednesday.
Ostapenko, ranked No 17 in the world, will face the winner of the match between Russian Liudmila Samsonova and Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk next. The win was her second over Pegula in five career meetings and also her second top 5 win of the season.
Ahead of her victory, the Latvian won against German qualifier Eva Lys (2-6, 6-3, 6-2) and Linda Noskova (walkover). The win keeps her in contention for a spot in the season-ending WTA Finals in Cancun at the end of this month and moves her into her sixth quarter-final of the year.
Pegula, ranked No 4 and a finalist in Tokyo last weej, defeated Russian Anna Blinkova (6-7 (2), 6-2, 6-1) in the previous round.
