China Open: Incredible comeback from Osaka to reach third round
Naomi Osaka beat Yulia Putintseva 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 on Friday and will face American Katie Volynets in the next round
Japanese Naomi Osaka reached the third round of the China Open by beating Kazakh Yulia Putintseva, the No 21 seed, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 at the National Tennis Center in Beijing on Friday.
Osaka, ranked No 73, will face American Katie Volynets next.
With new coach Patrick Mouratoglou looking on, she broke an unwanted 22-match streak – losing every match at WTA level after losing the first set – including Olympics and team events.
Ahead of her victory, the Japanese won against Italian Lucia Bronzetti (6-3, 6-2).
