China Open: Maria beats Trevisan to reach the second round
Tatjana Maria defeated Martina Trevisan 6-3, 7-6 (2) and will face the winner of the match between Qinwen Zheng and Elena Rybakina in the next round
German Tatjana Maria won against Italian Martina Trevisan 6-3, 7-6 (2) to advance to the 32 of the China Open on Saturday night.
In the final 1000-level event on the WTA, first-round matches are already underway in Beijing, as a stacked field competes to reach the second week of the competition.
There are four players who are already into the last 32, however. Pegula, Sakkari, Pavlyuchenkova and Kudermetova have all received bye courtesy of a new rule allowing byes based on recent performance.
Maria, ranked No 53, will face the winner of the match between Chinese Qinwen Zheng and Kazakh Elena Rybakina, the No 5 seed, next.
