Pole Magda Linette moved into the last 16 of the China Open when American Jennifer Brady retired on Monday night.
Linette, ranked No 25, led 3-1 when Brady, ranked No 261, pulled out on Monday night.
The Pole will face the winner of the match between Frenchwoman Varvara Gracheva and Pole Iga Swiatek, the second seed, next.
In the previous round, Magda Linette defeated Belarusian Victoria Azarenka, the No 14 seed (5-7, 6-1, 6-2).
The American won against qualifier Peyton Stearns (6-4, 6-2) in the previous round.
