China Open: Linette upsets Paolini to reach last 16
The Pole dished out a bagel against seed No 3 Paolini in second set on Monday
Pole Magda Linette, the No 31 seed, won against Italian Jasmine Paolini, the No 3 seed, 6-4, 6-0 to move into the last 16 of the China Open at the National Tennis Center in Beijing on Monday.
The match opened with Linette breaking Paolini’s in the first game. She then secured a double break but the Italian bounced back and returned on serve after the six games. Linette, the world No 45, eventually edged out with one more break-point conversion to take the set.
In the second set, Linette crushed through the French Open and Wimbledon finalist, scoring a bagel to end the match in less than 90 minutes.
Linette, ranked No 45, will face the winner of the match between Russian Mirra Andreeva, the No 17 seed, and Croat Donna Vekic, the No 16 seed, next.
Ahead of her victory, the Pole beat Japanese Moyuka Uchijima (6-4, 4-6, 6-3).
Paolini, ranked No 5, edged out Dane Clara Tauson (1-6, 7-5, 6-4) in the previous round of the Beijing tournament.
