China Open: Kudermetova stages comeback win in second round
The Russian edged out Xinyu Wang 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 on Friday
Russian Veronika Kudermetova, the No 32 seed, moved into the third round of the China Open by edging out Chinese Xinyu Wang 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 at the National Tennis Center in Beijing on Friday.
Kudermetova started off shakily against Wang, losing her serve three times (one break back) in the opening set.
She, however, regrouped quickly and played disciplined tennis in the remaining two sets, converting two break points on world No 50 Wang’s serve.
Kudermetova, ranked No 39, will face the winner of the match between Frenchwoman Diane Parry and American Jessica Pegula, the second seed, next.
Wang, ranked No 50, won against Japanese lucky loser Mai Hontama (6-1, 6-3) in the previous round of the Beijing tournament.
