China Open: Kalinskaya reaches last 16
Anna Kalinskaya benefited from the abandonment of Peyton Stearns on Monday
Russian Anna Kalinskaya, the No 10 seed, reached the last 16 of the China Open when American Peyton Stearns retired at the National Tennis Center in Beijing on Monday.
Kalinskaya, ranked No 14, led 3-6, 6-3, 3-1 when Stearns, ranked No 46, pulled out. The match notably began on Sunday (September 29) but was called off for the day because of rain.
The Russian will play Ukrainian qualifier Yuliia Starodubtseva next.
Anna Kalinskaya edged out American qualifier Hailey Baptiste (3-6, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (5)) in the previous round of the Beijing tournament.
In the previous rounds of the Beijing tournament, the 22-year-old American beat Spaniard Jessica Bouzas Maneiro (6-2, 6-4) and Canadian Leylah Fernandez, the No 20 seed (7-5, 6-2).
