China Open: Garcia books quarter-final spot, to play Swiatek
The Frenchwoman defeats Anhelina Kalinina 6-3, 6-2 in the round of 16 on Thursday in Beijing
France’s Caroline Garcia, the No 9 seed, beat Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina 6-3, 6-2 to move into the last eight of the China Open at National Tennis Center in Beijing on Thursday.
Garcia, ranked No 10 in the world and in dire need of a deep result this week to have chances to qualify for the season-ending WTA Finals which she won last year, will play second seed Iga Swiatek next.
The Pole holds a slim 2-1 edge over Garcia in their career head-to-head series.
Earlier in the tournament, the Frenchwoman won against Ukrainian qualifier Kateryna Baindl (6-2, 6-4) and Kazakh qualifier Yulia Putintseva (6-3, 3-6, 6-3).
Kalinina, ranked No 28, won against No 8 seed Marketa Vondrousova (1-6, 6-4, 6-1) and Australian Daria Saville (6-2, 7-6 (5)) in the previous rounds of the Beijing tournament.
