American Claire Liu advanced to the last 4 of the Chicago Women’s Open by edging out Spaniard Rebeka Masarova, the No 6 seed, 7-5, 5-7, 7-6 (3) on Thursday afternoon.
Liu, ranked No 81, will play Spaniard Cristina Bucsa next.
Ahead of her victory, the American won against Romanian Irina Fetecau (6-1, 6-4) and Australian qualifier Storm Hunter (6-0, 6-4).
Masarova, ranked No 74, beat Hungarian Panna Udvardy (6-2, 6-4) and American Madison Brengle (7-6 (4), 6-3) in the previous rounds.
