Charleston Open: Stephens moves into last 16

American Sloane Stephens advanced to the last 16 of the Charleston Open by winning against Canadian Leylah Fernandez, the No 14 seed, 6-4, 6-4 at the Family Circle Tennis Center on Thursday evening.

Stephens, ranked No 40, will face the winner of the match between American Danielle Collins and Tunisian Ons Jabeur, the second seed, next.

The American beat Pole Magdalena Frech (6-0, 6-2) in the previous round of the Charleston tournament.
