Charleston Open: 2022 finalist Jabeur through to last 16
The Tunisian will meet the winner of the match between Czech Linda Fruhvirtova and American wildcard Caroline Dolehide in the next round
Tunisian Ons Jabeur, the No 2 seed, defeated Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko 6-3, 6-3 to move into the last 16 of the Charleston Open at the Family Circle Tennis Center on Tuesday night
Jabeur, ranked No 5 in the world and the runner-up to Swiss Belinda Bencic in 2022, will face the winner of the match between Czech Linda Fruhvirtova and American wildcard Caroline Dolehide next.
After her breakthrough 2022 season which saw her reach two Grand Slam finals and peak at No 2 in the rankings, Jabeur has had a comparatively slower start in 2023. Her win on Tuesday was only her fifth victory of the season, taking her record to 5-4 for the year.
Jabeur also underwent surgery which forced her to miss the Middle East swing of Doha and Dubai in February.
Tsurenko, ranked No 77, won against Argentinian qualifier Paula Ormaechea (6-1, 6-1) in the previous round of the Charleston tournament while Jabeur had received a first round bye.
