Australian Maya Joint, the No 3 seed, edged out American Hanna Chang 6-7 (4), 7-5, 6-4 to advance to the last 16 of the Cancun Tennis Open on Monday.
Joint, ranked No 112, will play American wildcard Madison Sieg next.
