Canberra Open: Wei reaches last eight

Chinese Wei Sijia advanced to the last eight of the Canberra Open by winning against Thai Mananchaya Sawangkaew, the No 8 seed, 6-3, 6-2 at the Canberra Tennis Centre on Wednesday.

Wei, ranked No 134, will play the winner of the match between French qualifier Elsa Jacquemot and Swiss qualifier Simona Waltert next.

The 21-year-old Chinese beat Australian wildcard Lizette Cabrera (6-3, 6-4) in the previous round of the Canberra tournament.

In the first round of the Canberra tournament, Sawangkaew, ranked No 130, defeated German Ella Seidel (4-6, 6-2, 6-3).
