Montreal: Samsonova caps off amazing day with win over Bencic
Liudmila Samsonova won two matches on Friday, the second one coming against Belinda Bencic in the Montreal quarter-finals. Samsonova had previously defeated Aryna Sabalenka.
Liudmila Samsonova defeated 12th-seeded Belinda Bencic 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the semi-finals of the National Bank Open on Saturday night.
It was Samsonova’s second win of the day, as her third-round match against Aryna Sabalenka was postponed by rain on Thursday. The world No 18 beat Sabalenka in three sets on Saturday afternoon, setting the stage for a more routine victory over Bencic.
Samsonova awaits either Elena Rybakina or Daria Kasatkina in the semis.
The Russian defeated Katerina Siniakova (4-6, 6-2, 6-3), Chinese Qinwen Zheng (6-3, 6-2) and Sabalenka, the second seed (7-6 (2), 4-6, 6-3) ahead of her victory over Bencic.
Earlier in the tournament Bencic, ranked No 13, beat Italian Lucia Bronzetti (6-2, 6-3), American qualifier Alycia Parks (6-3, 5-7, 6-4) and No 7 seed Petra Kvitova (6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-1).
