Jessica Pegula defeated Coco Gauff on Friday afternoon in Montreal. Pegula awaits either Iga Swiatek or Danielle Collins in the semi-finals.
An all-American showdown between doubles partners Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff certainly lived up to the hype in the quarter-finals of the National Bank Open on Friday afternoon in Montreal. Pegula prevailed 6-2, 5-7, 7-5 after two hours and 25 minutes.
The fourth seed will face either world No 1 Iga Swiatek or qualifier Danielle Collins in the semi-finals on Saturday.
“It’s always a tough match (with Gauff),” Pegula commented. “We know each other’s games so well, so we kind of know what we’re going to do to each other — know what our goal is. It’s just kind of trying to execute it at the right times and as best as possible. So I think I was just able to do it a little bit better today.”
Earlier in the tournament, the world No 3 defeated Kazakh lucky loser Yulia Putintseva (6-4, 6-4) and Italian Jasmine Paolini (6-4, 6-0).
Gauff, ranked No 7, was coming off a title in Washington, D.C. She advanced to the quarters in Montreal by beating qualifier Katie Boulter (6-2, 6-2) and Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova (6-3, 6-0).
