No 13 seed Madison Keys has snuffed out any hope of a dream run by wildcard Venus Williams at the Canadian Open on Monday night, defeating the former world No 1 6-2, 7-5 to advance to the second round.
43-year-old Williams gave a good account of herself, fighting hard in the second set and coming close to forcing a decider after she staved off eight match points. However, Keys had too much power for the seven-time Grand Slam champion, winning 63 percent of her second serve return points.
Keys, ranked No 15, will play Italian Jasmine Paolini next.
