In a battle of former Montreal champions, Italy’s Camila Giorgi, the 2021 National Bank Open title winner, stood tall above 2019 champion Bianca Andreescu, sending the hometown favourite home with a disappointing 6-3, 6-2 loss.

The Italian, who came through the qualifying draw, was happy with her third win in a row in Montreal this week. “I think it was a really good match, really good because both players was playing great. I think it was really high-level. So I think it was amazing, the first two matches, and today was I feel even better in the court and how I was moving. So this is my strength, so it’s good,” she said.

Giorgi, ranked No 51 and a qualifier this week in Canada, will face No 7 seed Petra Kvitova next.

Andreescu, coming off a first-round loss in Washington, D.C., where she failed to convert three match points against Marta Kostyuk, had little impact against Giorgi’s power game on Tuesday night.

Giorgi improves to 1-1 lifetime against Andreescu and 10-4 lifetime at the National Bank Open.
