Canadian Open: Gauff blitzes Wimbledon champ to book all-American quarter-final
Coco Gauff beat Marketa Vondrousova 6-3, 6-0 on Friday night. She’ll play American Jessica Pegula, the No 4 seed, in the next round
American Coco Gauff, the No 6 seed, defeated No 9 seed Marketa Vondrousova 6-3, 6-0 to reach the quarter-finals of the Canadian Open at Stade IGA in Montreal on Friday night.
The world No 7 needed just one hour and two minutes to dispatch the WTA Tour’s latest Grand Slam champion, with Vondrousova not producing nearly the same level that took her all the way to lifting the trophy at Wimbledon last month.
Gauff broke her opponent’s serve an impressive five times, setting an all-American quarter-final against No 4 seed Jessica Pegula, next. The 19-year-old will enter the quarter-finals on a six match winning streak, having claimed the title in Washington last week.
Earlier, Gauff won against qualifier Katie Boulter (6-2, 6-2) in the previous round of the Canadian Open.
Vondrousova, ranked No 10, had defeated Egyptian Mayar Sherif (6-4, 6-2) and Dane wildcard Caroline Wozniacki (6-2, 7-5).
