WTA Brisbane: Rybakina through to semis, faces 19-year-old Noskova
Elena Rybakina benefited from the retirement of Anastasia Potapova (6-1) in the quarter-finals on Friday
Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina, the No 2 seed, advanced to the semi-finals of the WTA Brisbane Open when Russian Anastasia Potapova, the No 11 seed, retired at the Queensland Tennis Center on Friday.
Rybakina, ranked No 4 in the world, led 6-1 when Potapova, ranked No 28, pulled out from their quarter-final clash on Friday due to injury.
“Definitely not how I wanted to win. I wish Anastasia a speedy recovery,” Rybakina said during her on-court interview. “She had a tough battle yesterday. It wasn’t easy for me also to start today. It’s quite humid. I’m happy in the end I get the chance to play another match. But not how I wanted to win.”
The Kazakh will face 19-year-old Czech Linda Noskova, who ended the run of 16-year-old Russian Mirra Andreeva in another quarter-final.
Earlier in the week, Rybakina defeated Australian qualifier Olivia Gadecki (6-4, 6-1) and Belgian Elise Mertens, the No 13 seed (6-1, 6-0) while Potapova edged out Australian wildcard Daria Saville (6-4, 3-6, 6-4) and No 6 seed Veronika Kudermetova (7-5, 6-7 (7), 6-4).
