Brisbane Open: Navarro ousted in second round
Emma Navarro faced a 7-5, 7-5 loss at the hands of Australian wildcard Kimberly Birrell on Wednesday
Australian wildcard Kimberly Birrell reached the last 16 of the Brisbane Open by winning against American Emma Navarro, the second seed, 7-5, 7-5 at the Queensland Tennis Centre on Wednesday.
After a tight start, Navarro and Birrell relied heavily on their return games as opposed to serving it out, exchanging 10 breaks, out of which seven came in the second set.
The Aussie eventually prevailed after two hours, three minutes, having broken the American six times with a 60 percent average on the second-serve return.
Birrell, ranked No 113, will face the winner of the match between Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska, the No 16 seed, and Russian Anastasia Potapova next.
Ahead of her victory, the Australian beat qualifier Priscilla Hon (3-6, 7-5, 6-2).
