Ukraine’s Anhelina Kalinina reached the quarter-finals of the Brisbane Open by beating Chinese Yue Yuan 6-1, 6-4 at the Queensland Tennis Centre on Thursday.

Kalinina, ranked No 55, will play Australian wildcard Kimberly Birrell next.

Ahead of her win today, the Ukrainian benefited from the retirement of Chinese Yafan Wang (6-4, 2-0) and won against Russian Diana Shnaider, the No 5 seed (6-3, 4-6, 6-1).

Yuan, ranked No 49, defeated Dutchwoman Arantxa Rus (6-2, 6-4) and Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk, the No 9 seed (6-4, 6-3) in the previous round of the tournament.
