Brisbane Open: Jabeur through to quarter-finals, faces Andreeva next
The Tunisian edged out Elina Avanesyan 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 in the second round on Thursday
Former world No 2 Ons Jabeur advanced to the quarter-finals of the Brisbane Open by edging out Armenian Elina Avanesyan 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 at the Queensland Tennis Centre on Thursday.
Tunisia’s Jabeur, ranked No 42, will face Russian Mirra Andreeva, the No 8 seed, next. Andreeva defeated Jabeur in their only previous meeting in the second round of the 2024 Australian Open.
This is Jabeur’s first tournament since Cincinnati in early August due to injuries.
In the previous rounds of the tournament, the Tunisian won against Chinese Saisai Zheng (7-6 (5), 6-4) and Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova, the No 14 seed (6-3, 6-2).
Avanesyan, ranked No 43, beat Slovak Rebecca Sramkova (1-6, 6-2, 6-2) and Spaniard Paula Badosa, the No 4 seed (6-3, 1-6, 6-2) earlier in the week.
