Romanian Anca Todoni, the No 6 seed, moved into the quarter-finals of the Bolivia Open when American Carson Branstine retired on Thursday night.
Todoni, ranked No 138, led 6-0, 3-0 when Branstine, ranked No 262, pulled out of the match. The American is the fourth woman to retire mid-match this tournament, with top seed Maya Sherif notably pulling out after just three games in the first round.
The 20-year-old Romanian will play the winner of the match between Ukrainian Valeriya Strakhova and Frenchwoman Chloe Paquet, the second seed, next.
In the previous round, Anca Todoni beat Argentinian wildcard Sol Ailin Larraya Guidi (6-3, 6-2).
The American won against Dutchwoman Anouk Koevermans (6-3, 6-4) in the previous round.
