Spaniard Leyre Romero Gormaz reached the last eight of the Bolivia Open when No 8 seed Francesca Jones retired on Wednesday night.
Romero Gormaz, ranked No 167, led 3-6, 6-3, 5-3 when Jones, ranked No 164, pulled out on Wednesday night.
The Spaniard will face the winner of the match between Colombian Emiliana Arango and Chilean wildcard Antonia Vergara Rivera next.
Ahead of her victory, Leyre Romero Gormaz benefited from the abandonment of Italian Nuria Brancaccio (6-4, 3-6, 5-0).
Francesca Jones beat Argentinian Martina Capurro Taborda (6-1, 6-2) in the previous round.
