Birmingham Open: Dolehide makes quarter-finals after Mertens pulls out

American lucky loser Caroline Dolehide moved into the last eight of the Birmingham Open when Belgian Elise Mertens, the No 5 seed, retired on Thursday evening at Edgbaston Priory Club.

Dolehide, ranked No 61, led 6-3, 3-0 when Mertens, ranked No 32, pulled out at Edgbaston Priory Club on Thursday evening.

The American will play Kazakh Yulia Putintseva next.

In the previous round of the Birmingham tournament, Caroline Dolehide edged out Karolina Pliskova (2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5)).

The Belgian beat Dane wildcard Caroline Wozniacki (6-4, 6-1) in the previous round of the Birmingham tournament.
