Birmingham Classic: Ostapenko advances to last four
Jelena Ostapenko beat Magdalena Frech 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 on Friday afternoon and will play the winner of the match between wildcard Harriet Dart and Russian Anastasia Potapova, the No 4 seed, in the next round
Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, the second seed, defeated Pole qualifier Magdalena Frech 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 to advance to the semi-finals of the Birmingham Classic at Edgbaston Priory Club on Friday.
Ostapenko, ranked No 17, will play the winner of the match between wildcard Harriet Dart and Russian Anastasia Potapova, the No 4 seed, next.

Ahead of her victory, the Latvian won against Czech Linda Noskova (6-2, 5-7, 6-1) and American wildcard Venus Williams (6-3, 5-7, 6-3).
Frech, ranked No 72, beat Czech Barbora Strycova (7-6 (3), 6-1) and edged out Romanian Sorana Cirstea, the No 8 seed (6-3, 6-7 (1), 6-4) earlier in the tournament.
