Berlin Open: Vekic sets up Sakkari semi-final

Croat Donna Vekic moved into the last four of the Berlin Open by beating Russian lucky loser Elina Avanesyan 6-2, 7-6 at Rot-Weiss Tennis Club on Saturday.

Vekic, ranked No 23, will face Greek Maria Sakkari, the No 6 seed, next.

The Croat won against Russian Varvara Gracheva (6-3, 6-2) and edged out Kazakh Elena Rybakina, the second seed (6-7 (1), 6-3, 6-4) in the previous rounds of the Berlin tournament.

Earlier in the tournament, Avanesyan, ranked No 81, edged out No 8 seed Daria Kasatkina (6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (7)) and won against Anna Blinkova (1-6, 6-3, 6-2).
