Berlin Open: Sixth seed Sakkari makes semi-finals

Maria Sakkari defeated Marketa Vondrousova 7-6 (7), 6-1 on Saturday night and will play the winner of the match between Russian lucky loser Elina Avanesyan and Croat Donna Vekic in the next round

Greek Maria Sakkari, the No 6 seed, reached the semi-finals of the Berlin Open by winning against Czech wildcard Marketa Vondrousova 7-6 (7), 6-1 at Rot-Weiss Tennis Club on Saturday.

Sakkari, ranked No 8, will play the winner of the match between Russian lucky loser Elina Avanesyan and Croat Donna Vekic next.

The Greek beat Frenchwoman Alize Cornet (6-4, 6-2) and Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich (6-2, 6-1) in the previous rounds of the Berlin tournament.

Earlier in the tournament, Vondrousova, ranked No 53, defeated Canadian Bianca Andreescu (7-6, 7-5) and German qualifier Jule Niemeier (6-3, 6-5 ret.).
