Berlin Open: Kalinskaya into semis as Sabalenka retires
The Russian will take on Belarus’ Victoria Azarenka for a spot in the Berlin final
Russia’s Anna Kalinskaya reached the semi-finals of the Berlin Open when Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, the second seed, retired at Rot-Weiss Tennis Club on Saturday.
Kalinskaya, ranked No 24 in the world, led 5-1 when Sabalenka, ranked No 3, pulled out at the Rot-Weiss Tennis Club.
The Russian will play Belarusian Victoria Azarenka next for a place in the final. The semi-final will take place later on Saturday itself as rain had delayed the quarter-final action from Friday.
This was the second time an opponent of Kalinsksya had retired during the first set of the match. Earlier in the tournament, the Russian won against Japanese qualifier Nao Hibino (2-6, 6-4, 6-2) and No 5 seed Marketa Vondrousova (5-5 ret.).
Sabalenka defeated Russian Daria Kasatkina (6-1, 6-4) in the previous round of the tournament.
