Berlin Open: Gauff into semis as Jabeur retires after losing first set
Coco Gauff benefited from the abandonment of Ons Jabeur (7-6 (9)) on Saturday and will face the winner of the match between American Jessica Pegula, the No 4 seed, and qualifier Katerina Siniakova in the next round
American Coco Gauff, the top seed, moved into the semi-finals of the Berlin Open as yet another player pulled out during quarter-final action.
Gauff won the first set 7-6 (9) over Ons Jabeur, the No 8 seed, after which the Tunisian retired at Rot-Weiss Tennis Club on Saturday.
This was the third quarter-final being played in the tournament and none of them have seen a second set being played. Second seed Aryna Sabalenka and third seed Elena Rybakina also pulled out during the first set of their quarter-final matches.
The 20-year-old Gauff, ranked No 2 in the world, will play the winner of the match between American Jessica Pegula, the No 4 seed, and qualifier Katerina Siniakova in the semi-finals. The semi-finals are likely to be played on Saturday itself weather permitting
Ahead of her win today, Gauff defeated Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova (7-6 (6), 6-2).
Jabeur had won against Chinese qualifier Xinyu Wang (6-4, 7-6 (4)) and edged out Linda Noskova (6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4) in the previous rounds of the tournament.
