Bencic to miss Madrid & Rome due to hip injury
The world No 11 has won two titles and also reached the finals of another event in 2023
Reigning Olympic gold medallist Belinda Bencic has pulled out of the two big clay courts events coming up, Madrid and Rome, due to a hip injury.
The 111th-ranked Bencic posted an update on her social media account, saying that she will miss the Mutua Madrid Open and the Internazionali BNL d’Italia due to the injury.
“I have some discomfort in my hip which I struggled with during the U.S. swing as well and need to take a little rest and recover to be back at 100% for Roland-Garros,” Bencic wrote in her Instagram story. “I will miss both tournaments dearly but will be back in a few weeks and can’t wait to be back competing soon and continuing in great form.”
Bencic, who split from coach Dmitry Tursunov earlier this month, is hopeful she will be back in time for Roland-Garros, which begins on May 28 in Paris.
The Swiss has been in good form in 2023 – winning titles in Adelaide and Abu Dhabi – and finishing runner-up in Charleston two weeks ago.
