Swiss wildcard Belinda Bencic edged out American Coco Gauff, the No 3 seed, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the last eight of the Indian Wells WTA 1000 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Wednesday.

Indian Wells marks Bencic’s first WTA 1000 quarter-final since 2023, and her first as a mother – gaining revenge for her loss at the Australian Open to the American.

The Swiss had previously reached the last eight of the event in 2019 – losing in the semi-finals to Angelique Kerber – and has now won 10 of her last 11 matches.

Bencic, ranked No 58, will face the winner of the match between Croat Donna Vekic, the No 19 seed, and American Madison Keys, the No 5 seed, next.

Earlier in the tournament, the Swiss beat German Tatjana Maria (6-1, 6-1), American Amanda Anisimova, the No 17 seed (6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-1) and Russian Diana Shnaider, the No 13 seed (6-4, 6-4).

Gauff, ranked No 3, edged out Japanese Moyuka Uchijima (6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (4)) and won against Greek Maria Sakkari, the No 29 seed (7-6 (1), 6-2) in the previous rounds of the Indian Wells tournament.
