Bencic double bagels V Kudermetova to reach quarter-finals in Abu Dhabi
The Swiss defeated Veronika Kudermetova in 65 minutes on Wednesday and will play the winner of the match between Yulia Putintseva and Marketa Vondrousova next
Swiss wildcard Belinda Bencic won against Russian lucky loser Veronika Kudermetova 6-0, 6-0 to advance to the quarter-finals of the Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open at the International Tennis Centre, Zayed Sports City on Wednesday.
Bencic needed only 65 minutes to finish the job against Kudermetova.
The Swiss naturally completed the double bagel with six breaks of serves, keeping her serve unchallenged throughout. She hit two aces and benefitted from her opponent’s three double faults, averaging an impressive 62 percent on the first-serve return and 72 percent on the second.
Bencic, ranked No 157, will face the winner of the match between Kazakh Yulia Putintseva, the No 4 seed, and wildcard Marketa Vondrousova next.
In the previous round of the Abu Dhabi tournament, the Swiss defeated Slovak Rebecca Sramkova (6-2, 3-6, 6-1).
Kudermetova, ranked No 52, edged out No 5 seed Liudmila Samsonova (5-7, 6-1, 7-6 (5)) during the first round of the Abu Dhabi tournament.
