Barranquilla Open: Ferro ousts Schmiedlova, advances to final
Fiona Ferro won against Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 on Saturday night. She’ll play German Tatjana Maria, the top seed, for the title
Frenchwoman Fiona Ferro has deprived the Barranquilla Open of a final featuring the top two seeds, after ousting second seed Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 on Saturday night.
The match was a topsy-turvy affair, with 14 breaks of serve in total. However, it was Ferro who finished strongest, serving well in the third set and breaking her Slovak opponent three times to book a spot in the Barranquilla Open final on Sunday.
Ferro, ranked No 252, will play German Tatjana Maria, the top seed, next.
The Frenchwoman defeated Spaniard Aliona Bolsova, the No 4 seed (6-2, 6-1), Elsa Jacquemot (6-3, 4-6, 6-3) and Romanian Irina Fetecau (6-4, 6-0) earlier in the tournament.
In the previous rounds, Schmiedlova, ranked No 70, won against Colombian wildcard María Paulina Pérez García (4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3), Colombian Emiliana Arango (6-0, 6-2) and Brazilian Laura Pigossi, the No 8 seed (6-3, 2-6, 6-2).
