American Emma Navarro progressed to the semi-finals of Bad Homburg when opponent Spaniard Rebeka Masarova retired when leading 7-6 (2), 1-1.
She will play the winner of the match between Katerina Siniakova and Russian Liudmila Samsonova, the second seed, next.
Navarro, ranked No 60, won against Argentinian lucky loser Nadia Podoroska (6-2, 6-0) and Frenchwoman Alize Cornet (7-5, 7-6 (6)) earlier in the tournament.
