Austin Open: Volynets books spot in the semi-finals

Katie Volynets advanced to the semi-finals of the Austin Open by winning against wildcard Peyton Stearns 7-5, 6-3 at the Westwood Country Club on Friday.

Volynets, ranked No 92, will play the winner of the match between Russian Varvara Gracheva and American Sloane Stephens, the No 5 seed, next.

Katie Volynets defeated Alison Riske-Amritraj (6-3, 3-6, 6-0) and edged out Russian Anastasia Potapova, the No 3 seed (5-7, 6-2, 7-5) in the previous rounds of the Austin tournament.

Stearns, ranked No 137, edged out qualifier Katie Boulter (7-6 (5), 6-7 (2), 7-6 (5)) and beat Swede wildcard Mirjam Bjorklund (6-3, 7-5).
