American Taylor Townsend beat Mexican wildcard Fernanda Contreras Gomez 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 to reach the second round of the Austin Open at the Westwood Country Club on Tuesday evening.
Townsend, ranked No 83, will face Chinese Yue Yuan, the No 8 seed, next.
