Austin Open: Former US Open champion Stephens to meet Gracheva in quarter-finals
Stephens defeats British qualifier Heather Watson 6-4, 6-4 on Wednesday
American Sloane Stephens, the No 5 seed, reached the last eight of the Austin Open by beating British qualifier Heather Watson 6-4, 6-4 at the Westwood Country Club on Wednesday.
Stephens, ranked No 51 and a former US Open champion, will face Varvara Gracheva next. The American defeated Taylor Townsend (6-3, 6-3) in the previous round of the Austin tournament.
In the first round of the Austin tournament, Watson, ranked No 145, won against Montenegrin Danka Kovinic (7-6 (2), 6-4).
