Austin Open: Friedsam makes last eight

German Anna-Lena Friedsam edged out Russian lucky loser Erika Andreeva 7-5, 6-7 (2), 7-6 (8) to advance to the last 8 of the Austin Open at the Westwood Country Club on Thursday.

Friedsam, ranked No 108, will face the winner of the match between Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk, the No 8 seed, and American Madison Brengle next.

Ahead of her victory, the German won against Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska (6-4, 6-4) in the previous round of the Austin tournament.

Andreeva, ranked No 135, edged out Harriet Dart (7-6 (4), 3-6, 7-6 (3)).
