Argentina Open: Pigossi wins first WTA title
Laura Pigossi lifted the trophy on Sunday evening against Maria Lourdes Carle
Brazilian Laura Pigossi, the No 5 seed, won her first title on the WTA Tour when she beat home favourite Maria Lourdes Carle, the No 8 seed, 6-3, 6-2 to win the Argentina Open at the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club on Sunday evening.
Ahead of her victory, Pigossi, ranked No 137, defeated Spaniard Leyre Romero Gormaz (6-4, 4-6, 6-4), Swiss Conny Perrin (6-2, 6-3), Argentinian Solana Sierra (2-6, 7-5, 6-3) and Mexican Renata Zarazua, the No 6 seed (6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (2)).
Carle, ranked No 175, beat Brazilian Gabriela Ce (3-6, 6-0, 6-3), Ipek Oz (6-1, 6-3), Frenchwoman Diane Parry, the top seed (7-6 (2), 6-3) and No 7 seed Julia Riera (2-6, 6-3, 6-1) in the previous rounds of the Argentinian tournament.
