After scary collapse in Guangzhou, Clara Tauson is recovering
Danish talent Clara Tauson had a scary incident in Guangzhou, and collapsed on the court before conceding her match to Yulia Putintseva. According to her father, she is recovering well
It happened at the end of two heated sets, in dreadful heat in Guangzhou.
Clara Tauson sank to the court and stayed there, head on the ground, as medical staff converged around her and eventually, after quite some time, took her off the court in a wheelchair.
Tauson would concede the match to Yulia Putintseva, 6-3, 7-6(5) (ret), in two hours and one minute (after just four points in the third set), but the real concern was about the health of the talented 20-year-old from Copenhagen.
According to Denmark’s BT Sports, she is doing well.
“Clara is recovering. She sits in an ice bath monitored by doctors. She will stay there for the time being,” wrote her father, Søren Tauson, in a text message to BT.
Tauson was struggling during the match but wanted to continue. Her father said that the Dane was not properly hydrated and that caused her physical difficulties.
“She always sweats a lot and here, of course, it was extremely profuse. It is not possible to drink enough to maintain fluid balance. That is the problem and created the situation,” explained Søren Tauson to BT. “The doctor recommended that she stop in the middle of the second set due to health risks. But like the great fighter she is, she wanted to play on, and she also played her best tennis for six months. In the light of hindsight, she should have followed the doctor’s instructions.”
