Badosa survives the Stearns test to reach Adelaide Open second round

Spaniard Paula Badosa, the No 5 seed, edged out American qualifier Peyton Stearns 6-7 (5), 6-3, 7-5 to advance to the second round of the Adelaide Open at the Memorial Drive Tennis Park on Monday.

It took Badosa two hours, 45 minutes to survive the Stearns test as the American kept the Spaniard on her toes throughout.

She faced a staggering 16 break points, saving 12, as her opponent averaged 51 percent on the second serve returns. Broken four times, Badosa, however, managed to convert seven break points, including the one on match point.

Badosa, ranked No 12, will play the winner of the match between Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk and American lucky loser Ashlyn Krueger next.
