Adelaide Open: Pegula reaches semi-finals

Jessica Pegula benefited from the abandonment of Ashlyn Krueger on Thursday. She’ll play the winner of the match between Yulia Putintseva and Diana Shnaider next

Top seed Jessica Pegula advanced to the semi-finals of the Adelaide Open when lucky loser Ashlyn Krueger retired at the Memorial Drive Tennis Park on Thursday.

Pegula, ranked No 7, led 6-4, 2-0 when Krueger, ranked No 54, pulled out.

Jessica Pegula will play the winner of the match between Kazakh Yulia Putintseva and Russian Diana Shnaider, the No 6 seed, next.

Pegula defeated Greek lucky loser Maria Sakkari (6-4, 6-1) ahead of her victory.

Earlier in the tournament, Ashlyn Krueger won against Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk (4-6, 6-2, 6-2) and Spaniard Paula Badosa, the No 5 seed (7-6 (4), 6-7 (4), 6-2).
