Jannik Sinner is a brand new player. The world No 1 confirmed in his own words on Saturday at Wimbledon what many suspected after he won the first grass-court title of his career in Halle last week when he beat Hubert Hurkacz in the final – Sinner is back to full strength after having to play Roland-Garros with little practice due to a hip issue that had been bothering him since Madrid.

“I took a few days off after Paris and was able to get back to work,” Sinner told reporters at Wimbledon on Saturday.

“I feel much better physically than at the beginning of Roland-Garros. In Paris, I arrived with doubts. Here, my body doesn’t raise any concerns and we have worked a lot for that, in the last few days, my team and I, this is no secret.

“So I have no doubts about my form and I feel ready to enter the competition. Even though I know that the conditions here are very different from Halle, this title was very important for me and I also know from my semi-final last year here at Wimbledon that I can play well on grass.”

There are doubts surrounding other players’ physical issues, however. Of particular significance is Novak Djokovic, who underwent knee surgery after withdrawing in the second week at Roland-Garros and is present a month later in the draw, as the No 2 seed.

Sinner practised with the Serb on Centre Court on Thursday.

“I feel like his knee is fine, but you have to ask him how he feels,” Sinner said.

“I can’t communicate on his feelings in his place and we only played for 45 minutes. It’s difficult to get an idea of the level of the players in these conditions.”

Whatever the case, Sinner has an idea of Djokovic’s level at the business end of the grass-court Grand Slam. The Serb has been the one to knock Sinner out of the tournament over the past two years, in the quarter-finals in 2022 and then in the last four last year. and semi-finals.

But this year, they cannot meet until the final.
