Sinner outplays Shelton to reach Wimbledon quarter-finals
Jannik Sinner beat Ben Shelton 6-2, 6-4, 7-6 (9). He’ll face the winner of the match between Grigor Dimitrov and Daniil Medvedev in the next round
Top seed and world No 1 Jannik Sinner was too strong for Ben Shelton, coming through against the world No 14 6-2, 6-4, 7-6 (9) to reach the quarter-finals of Wimbledon for the third consecutive year.
The Italian was in typically fine form, with his blistering groundstrokes proving too much to handle for the talented young American as Sinner raced into a two-set lead.
Shelton did well to raise his game in the third, matching his opponent for power and consistency to take it to a tiebreak.
The breaker was just as close as the set, with the pair playing out an enthralling finale that ended 11-9 to the Italian. Sinner saved four set points in total – two coming in that breaker – en route to wrapping up a hard-fought final set that sees him safely through to the last eight for a third straight year.
Sinner, ranked No 1, will play the winner of the match between Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, the No 10 seed, and Russian Daniil Medvedev, the No 5 seed, next.
Ahead of his victory, the 22-year-old Italian won against German Yannick Hanfmann (6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3), Matteo Berrettini (7-6 (3), 7-6 (4), 2-6, 7-6 (4)) and Serb Miomir Kecmanovic (6-1, 6-4, 6-2).
Shelton, ranked No 14, won against Italian qualifier Mattia Bellucci (4-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4), South African qualifier Lloyd Harris (4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-7 (5), 6-3, 7-6 (7)) and Canadian Denis Shapovalov (6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2) earlier in the tournament.
