American Tommy Paul, the No 12 seed, reached the last 16 of Wimbledon by beating Kazakh Alexander Bublik, the No 23 seed, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London on Friday.

There have been eight men in the Open Era to win the title at Queen’s and Wimbledon in the same year – after John McEnroe (1981, 1984), Jimmy Connors (1982), Boris Becker (1985), Pete Sampras (1995, 1999), Lleyton Hewitt (2002), Rafael Nadal (2008), Andy Murray (2013, 2016) and Carlos Alcaraz (2023).

27-year-old Paul, who defeated Lorenzo Musetti for the title at Queen’s this year for his first ATP title on grass, hopes to join that illustrious list.

He’s into the round of 16 at Wimbledon for the second time in three years.

Paul became the 38th American man to reach the round of 16 at Wimbledon, getting off court in just 85 minutes with a picture perfect performance that saw him blast 37 winners against just 14 unforced errors. Paul won 22 of 28 net points, while Bublik only won 16 of his 36 net forays.

Paul improves to 30-10 on the season with his triumph. The world No 13 will play the winner of the match between Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut and Italian Fabio Fognini next.

The American won against Spaniard Pedro Martinez (6-2, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3) and Finnish qualifier Otto Virtanen (4-6, 6-3, 5-7, 7-5, 6-4) earlier in the tournament.

In the previous rounds of The Championships, Bublik, ranked No 23, rallied to beat Jakub Mensik (4-6, 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-4, 6-2) and defeated Frenchman Arthur Cazaux (6-4, 7-6 (1), 6-4).
